The Journey

How does carbon offsetting work?

Four steps from everyday emissions to a balanced footprint, backed by credits permanently retired on public registries.

1

Everyday life produces emissions

Driving, flying, shopping and heating your home all release CO₂ into the atmosphere. The average UK footprint is measured in tonnes per year.

2

You fund verified projects

Your Offset Britain plan funds projects certified by Gold Standard, Verra VCS and UNFCCC, from woodland creation to renewable energy, in the UK and worldwide.

3

Projects reduce and remove CO₂

Renewable energy replaces fossil fuels and growing forests absorb carbon, preventing emissions that would otherwise enter the atmosphere.

4

Your impact is balanced

The CO₂ you produce is matched by CO₂ reduced or removed, with every credit permanently retired on a public registry. Your certificate is the proof, verifiable by anyone.

How It Works

What we actually do - Transparently

We are a subscription certificate service. Here is exactly how your money creates verifiable climate action, step by step.

01

You subscribe

Choose an individual plan from £5.99/month or a business plan from £566/year. Your subscription funds the purchase of verified carbon credits on your behalf.

View plans →
02

We retire the credits

We purchase carbon credits from Gold Standard, Verra VCS, and UNFCCC certified projects and permanently retire them on the global registry, meaning they can never be resold or reused.

Our methodology →
03

You receive a certificate

Your Carbon Offset Certificate is issued instantly with a unique verification ID. Anyone. Your customers, investors, or regulators can verify it is real at offsetbritain.org/pages/verify. No login required.

04

Your proof works for you every year

Your certificate is live on our public registry from the moment it is issued. Any procurement officer, auditor, customer, or journalist can verify it in 15 seconds. No account, no email, no trust required. The Gold Standard and Verra registry entries are the proof, not our word.

Each year you renew, your verified emissions history grows. Year two onwards we send you a Carbon Trajectory showing whether your actual footprint is falling alongside your offsets. Your documented path toward net zero, backed by international registry data.

Carbon offsetting, explained in plain English

What is carbon offsetting?

Carbon offsetting balances the CO₂ you emit by funding projects that reduce or remove an equivalent amount of emissions elsewhere. Each tonne is represented by a carbon credit, which is permanently retired on a public registry such as Verra or Gold Standard so it can never be counted twice.

How much does carbon offsetting cost in the UK?

With Offset Britain, individuals offset from £5.99 per month and businesses from £566 per year. Every plan includes a Carbon Offset Certificate with a unique ID that anyone can check free at our public verification page, with no account or login.

Which standards verify the credits?

All credits come from projects certified by Gold Standard, Verra VCS, UNFCCC or the UK Woodland Carbon Code. Retirements are recorded on the international registries themselves, so the proof does not depend on our word. See our methodology for how projects are selected.

Should I reduce emissions or offset first?

Reduce what you can, offset what you cannot. UK guidance, including PPN 006 for public sector suppliers, treats offsetting as the final step after measuring and cutting emissions. Our Carbon Reduction Plan service documents both sides for tenders and ESG reporting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Carbon Offset certification means that your carbon emissions have been calculated and an equivalent amount of carbon credits have been retired on your behalf. This effectively balances your carbon footprint to net zero, allowing you to claim and show carbon offset with verified documentation.

We work exclusively with carbon credits that meet recognised international standards including Verra VCS, Gold Standard, and UNFCCC. Each credit is independently verified and tracked through official registries to ensure authenticity and prevent double-counting.

Yes. Every certificate issued includes a unique verification ID that can be checked through our public verification system. This allows your stakeholders, customers, or anyone else to confirm the validity and status of your carbon offset certification at any time.

Business certification includes a formal certificate with unique verification ID, public verification page, usage rights for the Offset Britain certification mark, annual documentation suitable for ESG and sustainability reporting, and dedicated support for your certification needs.

Offset Britain was built on a simple belief: that carbon offsets should be verifiable by anyone, not just the company selling the certificate. Our methodology is aligned with ISO 14064 and GHG Protocol guidelines. Every credit is retired on Gold Standard or Verra VCS registries. Anyone can check any certificate we issue. No account, no login required.

Offset Britain Ltd (Company No. 05593179) was incorporated in October 2005. The Offset Britain certification brand is newly launched.

Every credit we retire carries a unique serial number tracked on international registries (Verra, Gold Standard, UNFCCC). Credits are permanently retired. They cannot be resold, reused, or double-counted. Your certificate includes the registry reference so you or any third party can independently verify the retirement.

Yes. Business plan certificates include full ESG documentation packs aligned with the GHG Protocol. This includes Scope 1, 2 and 3 guidance, retirement confirmation letters, and verification IDs suitable for annual sustainability reports, investor disclosures, and regulatory submissions.

Carbon removal credits actively take CO₂ out of the atmosphere (reforestation, direct air capture). Avoidance credits prevent emissions that would have otherwise occurred (renewable energy replacing fossil fuels, cookstove projects). Our portfolio includes both types, verified to the highest international standards, so your offset has maximum impact.
